Display Energy Certificates (DECs) show the energy performance of a building based on actual energy consumption. Based in Sheffield, NRG Focus provide efficient, cost-effective assessments across Leeds, York, and the surrounding areas of Yorkshire, covering the whole of the UK. We provide impartial DEC assessments, with guidance to help you improve future ratings, increasing the efficiency of your building and reducing running costs.

The rating is an indicator of the annual CO2 emissions caused from operating the building, shown on a scale from A to G. Ratings for the previous two years are also shown on the certificate, demonstrating whether the energy performance of the building is improving or not. The rating is based on the amount of energy consumed over a 12-month period and is taken from meter readings.

A DEC and advisory report are required for buildings with a total useful floor area over 250m2 which are occupied in whole or in part by public authorities, and frequently visited by the public.

DEC Certificate Legislation

The DEC Certificate and accompanying Advisory Report are valid for 10 years for buildings with a total useful floor are between 250m2 and 1,000m2. Where the building has a total useful floor area of more than 1,000m2, the DEC is valid for 12 months and the Advisory Report valid for seven years. The occupier of the building must display a valid DEC clearly visible to the public.

Current legislation requires all Display Energy Certificates to be lodged on the UK Government’s Landmark database where they can be freely inspected by the general public. This public accountability is designed to encourage building occupiers to improve the energy efficiency of their buildings.

The penalty for failing to display a DEC at all times is £500. The penalty for failing to have a valid Advisory Report is £1,000. These regulations are enforced by local Trading Standards officers who can repeat the penalty every 28 days of non-compliance. Organisations also run the risk of severe reputational damage for failing to comply with this important environmental legislation.
